What was more important to you for becoming who you are today?

From the moment my oldest daughter was born, it has been a personal goal of mine to set an example that would inspire, motivate, and build confidence as they grow and navigate life. I have allowed them to watch me succeed in my career and navigate tough lessons.  As a female executive in a male-dominated field, it can be challenging at times, but I want my daughters to know and believe that they can do anything they want and always rise to the challenge when faced with adversity.

Name one thing you wished you knew when beginning your career.

The power of networking! I didn’t realize the value of a professional network until about ten years ago. Networking opens the door to opportunities, partnerships, and collaborations that are often not accessible through traditional channels.  The emotional and professional support from like-minded individuals is invaluable, and the knowledge and advice shared are incomparable.

What are some of the most important skills that a cybersecurity expert must have?

Of course, being technically proficient is the first thing most people think is important, but for me, it’s PASSION! Something stands out when I meet a passionate cybersecurity professional. Passion drives the enthusiasm to continuously learn and stay abreast of our field’s latest trends, tools, and methodologies. Passion fuels the determination and resilience required to effectively tackle and resolve technical issues. Passion drives the advancement and innovation within our field, benefiting organizations and society.

Why have you applied for the Cybersecurity Leadership Program and the CISO Executive Certificate?

I am confident the Duke CISO Executive Certificate Program will be beneficial to this phase and essential to the next phase of my career. As a newly appointed CISO, I seek opportunities that will provide strategic insights, hone my leadership skills, and assist me in navigating complex cybersecurity challenges. My goal is to become a leader who drives success and secures the future of my organization in the digital age while continuing to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape.

How did you learn about the Duke CISO Executive Certificate Program?

There are only three programs dedicated to developing CISO executives in the US. After researching the programs, I found the Duke CISO Executive Certificate Program to be my best option.

What are some things you learned, and why are they important for you?

One of the most valuable things I gained during this experience was the opportunity to collaborate and learn from the many cybersecurity professionals in attendance.  The chance to share experiences and to hear how others would approach it and the insight gained to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape.  The last 12 weeks will be instrumental in my career progression as I now have an expanded professional network to share experiences and best practices to address issues.

What are some of your favorite teaching sessions?

I get excited when I see women on a cybersecurity agenda to speak and share their journey.  Kemba Walden is a trailblazer and inspiration without question.  I also enjoyed hearing Jen Ellis share her industry experience. Governance and Risk Management are the foundation of my career, so I was very intrigued by Professor Stansbury’s presentation.  I found myself diving into the details of the many case studies he covered.
