AI and Cybersecurity for Leaders Certificate

The increasing use of and dependence on artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative artificial intelligence (GAI), requires that leaders understand the risks associated with this technology and how to mitigate regulatory and operational risks to their organizations. The Duke AI and Cybersecurity for Leaders Certificate program will provide an introduction to cyber and AI and threats and vulnerabilities that may pose a risk to the organizations’ data and systems. Leaders will gain an understanding of regulatory frameworks and standards and of regulatory requirements that can be implemented to protect this critical technology.  On completion of the certificate program, leaders will have a firm grasp on threats, risks, mitigation, governance and oversight of Cyber and AI.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

Explain AI fundamentals and the AI–cybersecurity intersection

  • Describe the basic concepts behind AI (including generative AI) and how they relate to cybersecurity
  • Articulate how cybersecurity protects AI systems and, conversely, how AI can bolster cybersecurity defenses

Identify threats, vulnerabilities, and risk scenarios for AI systems and data

  • Recognize key threat sources and systemic vulnerabilities in AI pipelines (data ingestion, model training, deployment), including adversarial and supply-chain risks
  • Assess operational and regulatory risks to data, intellectual property, and privacy

Design and evaluate mitigation strategies, controls, and regulatory compliance

  • Apply frameworks, policies, and standards relevant to AI and cybersecurity risk management
  • Implement controls and safeguards to protect AI systems (e.g. governance, oversight, monitoring, privacy, explainability, bias, auditability)

Assess organizational AI & cybersecurity posture and environment

  • Map existing systems, supply chains, and data flows to locate risk gaps and exposures in AI-enabled or AI-dependent operations
  • Evaluate policies, organizational oversight, and resource allocation for AI security and cybersecurity integration

Lead governance, oversight, and continuous adaptation

  • Establish effective governance structures for AI and cybersecurity at executive and board levels
  • Develop reporting, oversight, and evaluation mechanisms (metrics, KPIs, compliance) to ensure ongoing risk management and alignment with regulatory requirements
